Human vs agent software surfaces in 2026: original Twin Score research

Original 2026 Twin Score research: 72 products scored twice, category means, and the design gap.

Build Something People Want and Build Something Agents Want are one catalog with two skins. This article is the original 2026 research table behind that split: 72 globally famous products scored twice, once as a human product and once as a machine product. The short answer: the median product in this set is easier for a person than for an agent, the gap is widest in design and consumer assistants, and the products that invert the gap are APIs that happen to have dashboards.

What we measured

A Twin Score is not a star rating and not a user-count claim. It is an editorial 0–100 composite published with a public rubric. The human axis weights interface clarity, onboarding, documentation written for people, collaboration, support, pricing fairness, accessibility, and reliability. The agent axis weights API quality, MCP or equivalent tool surface, CLI, structured docs, machine authentication, published quotas, determinism, and skill packaging. Named editors — Edu Tor, Maya Chen, and Jonas Okonkwo — assigned the scores in July and August 2026 using public apps, public docs, and public pricing pages. We did not scrape play stores. We did not invent reviews.

The dataset is the committed JSON in this repository. Anyone can download CSV or JSON from the agents site and recompute the table. That reproducibility is the point of a directory that claims to serve agents as a first-class audience.

Headline findings

Across 72 products the mean human Twin Score is higher than the mean agent Twin Score, but the distribution is not a smooth shift. Three clusters appear:

1. Human-native canvases (Figma, Canva, Midjourney, Superhuman, Grammarly, Framer) with agent scores often 20–40 points below the human score because there is no honest public API or the API cannot do the job the GUI does. 2. Balanced platforms (GitHub, Stripe, Shopify, Vercel, Slack, Notion, Linear) where both scores sit in the 80s or 90s because the company already sells a GUI and a machine contract. 3. Machine-native primitives (OpenAI Platform, Anthropic API, Neon, Cloudflare, Resend, Pinecone, AWS) where the agent score beats the human score because the console is a concession and the API is the product.

The inversion in cluster three is the story most "best AI tools of 2026" roundups still miss. They rank ChatGPT as if the chat box were the platform. We split ChatGPT from OpenAI Platform for that reason.

Category table (2026)

The table below is original research from this catalog. Numbers are editorial Twin Scores, not ratings with a rater count. Do not copy them into AggregateRating as user reviews.

| Category | n | Mean human | Mean agent | Gap (H−A) | Notes |
|---|---:|---:|---:|---:|---|
| AI assistants | 7 | 81 | 76 | +5 | Consumer apps beat APIs in search, not in contract quality |
| Developer tools | 14 | 84 | 84 | 0 | Editors, git hosts, and LLM APIs cancel out |
| Design | 8 | 85 | 63 | +22 | Widest human advantage in the set |
| Productivity | 9 | 84 | 70 | +14 | Email and grammar tools drag the agent mean |
| Infrastructure | 14 | 80 | 88 | −8 | Agents win; consoles are dense |
| Automation | 3 | 84 | 79 | +5 | Visual iPaaS vs self-host n8n |
| Marketing and CRM | 5 | 77 | 82 | −5 | Salesforce UI vs Salesforce API |
| Communications | 6 | 83 | 80 | +3 | Slack/Discord bots are first-class |
| Payments | 1 | 84 | 96 | −12 | Stripe is a machine product |
| Data and analytics | 7 | 77 | 85 | −8 | Observability APIs outrun UIs |

Read the gap column as a product-management fact. Design software still assumes a person holding a pointing device. Infrastructure software assumes a script. Marketing suites assume a sales ops hire and a middleware vendor. If you are an agent buyer, start in infrastructure, payments, and data. If you are a human buyer picking a canvas, start in design and productivity — and then read the twin page before you promise automation you cannot ship.

Assistants are not platforms

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, and Character.AI sit together in search results and should not sit together in a procurement matrix. Character.AI has no serious public agent contract; scoring it as if it were the OpenAI Platform is how fake roundups get written. Perplexity's human score is high because citations are the product; its agent score trails because the API is not yet the consumer app. Claude's agent score leads its human score in our table because Anthropic's docs, tool use, and marketplace routes (Bedrock, Vertex) are built for machines. ChatGPT's two scores are both high and still belong on two URLs.

The practical recommendation: when an agent asks "which model should I call?", answer with OpenAI Platform, Anthropic API, or Gemini on Vertex — not with the consumer chat URL. When a person asks "which app should I open?", answer with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity and mention the job (drafting, long context, Workspace, citations).

Design is the honesty test

Midjourney's agent Twin Score is 42 in this catalog. That is not an insult. It is a refusal to invent an API the company has not shipped. Canva and Framer similarly sell human outcomes. Figma is the design tool with a real file API and a plugin system, which is why its agent score is 77 rather than 40 — still far below its 94 human score, because a REST export is not a designer.

If your organization is promising "agents will generate production UI in Figma tonight", this table is the cold water. Agents can read files, apply tokens, and lint. Humans still push pixels. Our editorial policy forbids covering that gap with a fake MCP badge.

What changed in 2026

Three shifts moved scores this year compared with how the same brands were discussed in 2024:

First, coding agents became a default interface. Cursor's human score of 90 is a statement about the editor, not about a model. GitHub Copilot remains a copilot; Cursor is closer to an operator. We still do not treat either as a CI replacement.

Second, MCP became a marketing word. We only mark MCP as more than "none" or "basic" when there is a real, documented tool surface. Most products in this catalog have none. That emptiness is data.

Third, buyer language split. Humans still google "best CRM". Agents (and the people who wrangle them) ask for API quality, idempotency, and whether a SKILL.md can be written without lying. Twin Pages exist so those two queries do not collide on one generic SaaS landing page.

How to use the table without cheating

Do not average Twin Scores into a single rank and then write "best software 2026". A 96 agent score on Stripe and a 94 human score on Figma are not comparable jobs. Do not turn editorial composites into AggregateRating with reviewCount drawn from our staff of three. Do not republish the CSV with the license stripped; it is CC BY 4.0 so you can remix if you say where it came from.

Do use the table to pick a shortlist. Do follow the internal links to product pages, alternatives, and comparisons — those pages carry unique intros, not spun templates. Do read the methodology and editorial policy. Do look at the named author bios. That is E-E-A-T as practice, not as a slogan.

Limits

Seventy-two products is a curated worldwide set of famous names, not a census of software. Scores will move when APIs ship or when a GUI is redesigned. We would rather update a JSON file than pretend the 2026 table is eternal. Self-hosted versus SaaS editions (GitLab, n8n, WordPress, PostHog) are collapsed into one entity with a note; a future revision may split them. We did not run paid enterprise trials for every suite; where pricing is quote-only we say so.

The research question going into the next quarter is simple: which design and consumer-assistant vendors will publish a real machine contract, and which will stay honest canvases. Either choice can be a good business. Pretending they are the same product is not.

Read the Twin Score rubric on /scorecard, the methods on /methodology, and the product pages for Stripe, Figma, ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, and GitHub. The agents twin of this article lives in the developer resources and the public dataset. If you only remember one cell in the table, remember the design gap of +22. That is the 2026 software industry in a number: people still draw, machines still call APIs, and directories that mix those jobs up are not for either audience. Named editors will keep scoring in public, and the CSV remains the source of truth for anyone who wants to argue with a cell. Named editors will keep scoring in public, and the CSV remains the source of truth for anyone who wants to argue with a cell.
